Reaching the end of the beginning

I am studying towards a Bachelors in Accounting at the University of Stellenbosch. Accounting is a great course to study for a number of reasons. Studying accounting provides you with skills and knowledge that can be applied to a number of industries. In fact, so long as there are businesses in the world, accountants will always be needed.

The first year was a little challenging, taking into account the effects of Covid-19 and having to do part of my studies and exams online was probably the most difficult part of it all. As much as the pandemic was a challenge, studying accounting abroad is a fully immersive experience. It allows me to not only expand my academic and professional horizons, but my personal ones as well. Understanding another culture and being able to communicate effectively is the key to successfully building bridges, both within the business world and outside of it.

I learned that university is not as easy as it seems and one has to really work hard. It is important to manage your time properly and give it your best shot. Adapting fast is very important and once you find your way around, you will be able to keep up.

When it comes to the highlight of my first year, I think I learned a lot, especially within the field of accounting, law and business management. I enjoyed those modules and I really discovered that the route of accounting is for me. I also made some great friends from all over the world, with whom I had some of the greatest times in Stellenbosch. First year was a great experience.

Next year, I definitely look forward to studying, putting in more effort and learning as much as I can. I am told that second year is a little tougher, so I look forward to seeing what it holds.

To anyone who wants to go study outside Namibia: be prepared to go out of your comfort zone, make friends and, most of all, work extra hard. I am not going to lie, university is not that easy, but as long as you develop the right mindset and go through the process, everything will be great. That involves late-night studies, or even having to fail a test, which is uncommon for many bright students in high school, but it is a common thing at university.
