Radio personality Tanyaradzwa Daringo has been selected to represent Namibia at the 2013 Moremi Initiative for Women's Leadership in Africa (MILEAD). The MILEAD Fellows Programme is a one-year leadership development programme designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African women leaders. The programme targets dynamic young women interested in developing transformational leadership skills that would help them tackle issues affecting women in their communities and society as a whole. Applications are welcome from young African women living in Africa and the Diaspora.
MILEAD fellowship awards are granted to 25 young women with exceptional qualities who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organisation, and/or profession. To be eligible for the one-year programme, an applicant must be African, living on the continent or in the Diaspora; agree to participate in all required activities related to MILEAD, including a three-week residential Summer Institute in August; and commit to a community leadership service project. This year's summer institute will take place in Ghana in August.
Tanya is delighted to represent Namibia. She was born in Zimbabwe and moved to Namibia when she was just four years old. She says after the training in Ghana she intends to create a platform for victims of abuse to openly speak about their anguish and suffering. Tanya, who has always been involved in charity and humanitarian work, says it's unfortunate that there are so few platforms for those who have been victimised to express themselves.
Tanya is Namibia's first representative in the prestigious programme since 2010. She says the organisers will partially over her travel costs while the University of Namibia has also extended a helping hand.
