Quido quits to go business legit
Windhoek Gordon Joseph
Rap sensation Quido has opened up in a heartfelt interview with tjil about why he turned his back on the music industry and how he believes that guys should rather just focus on one woman.
Quido took the music industry by storm two years ago with the release of several hit songs, including songs like Soweto boy. His rivalry with more established artists at the time, like Dee-jay, and his often profound lyrics propelled him to the rapping elite. The talented artist shocked the country recently when rumours made the rounds that he had quit music. In an exclusive and heartfelt interview he tells tjil about the reasons why he quit music and what the future holds for him.
The Windhoek born artist has always been a bit eccentric and attended three different high schools in Windhoek. He tells tjil that he has always been different - the type that always insists on doing things differently.
Quido, whose full name is Quido Lee-Roy Mohamed, tells tjil that at some point in his life he also wanted to be a priest.
Hailed as the pretty boy of local Hip-Hop music, Quido hasn't always been secure about himself. He tells tjil that he always knew he could do great things, but never really believed it. He explains that this is why he entered the music scene, because he knew that he could entertain. However, he didn't realise that with his first offering he would become a household name.
Quido tells tjill that he was hospitalised late last year, and although he refuses to open up about why he ended up in hospital, he admits that this experience was a turning point for him. He further reveals that he quit music to focus on his business and studies.
I had to weigh the two options - focusing on music and seeing the level of success I will achieve or focusing on my business, he reluctantly reveals. Quido also recently started the SowetoDream Foundation that will help put poor kids through high school. The entrepreneur loves clothes and will be donating some of his outfits to young boys. He hopes to get other artists and corporate partners involved in SowetoDream Foundation.
Asked about his love life and the fact that he has been branded as a ladies' man, he points out that he has only had one girlfriend, who he has been dating for three years and whom he will probably marry.
Yes I am a bit of a flirt, but that's where it ends, he says.
He also tells tjil that if a man puts the energy they expend dating two or three girls into other aspects of their lives, like their studies or their career, the rewards would be greater. One woman is enough, it should be enough, he says.
Asked about public opinion that he should not have quit and that he should have juggled his business and entertainment career, Quido points out that he is definitely done with music.
In a rather heartfelt tone Quido tells tjil: I don't just want to survive, I want to live.
Expressing his love for business Quido says he wants to create jobs and improve the economy and go for greatness. He says he can't do all that while doing music.
Asked about whether he will still do music for fun, he points out that he will not release any solo projects, although he will still feature on songs with friends or artists who invite him.
He says he is still with the 061 Crew, because of the projects that were planned prior to his decision to quit music. His retirement from music is a huge loss to the Hip-Hop genre, but with such passion and wisdom, his decision to quit is probably a huge gain for the business community.
