Pirates beat Stars to move to second place on log
Orlando Pirates coach Lucky Kakuva says he wants his side to be the first team to get maximum points against current Namibia Premier League (NPL) log leader Tigers.
Orlando Pirates beat African Stars 1-0 in the Katutura derby on Friday night at the Independence Stadium to move into second place on the log in round 12 of the Premier League.
The NPL resumed on Wednesday after a two-week break to allow the senior national football team, the Brave Warriors to participate in the 2018 International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) World Cup qualifiers.
Ahead of the international break African Stars beat Julinho Sporting 2-1 in Rundu to remain level on 21 points with Black Africa, but a greater goal difference put them third on the log, while Black Africa were second.
Orlando Pirates moved to fourth spot on the log with 19 points after beating coastal side Blue Waters 4-0 in their last match.
On Friday night, a single goal from Terdius Uiseb in the second half was all Pirates needed to collect the maximum points and move to second place on the log with 22 points after 12 NPL games.
Speaking to Nampa on Saturday, Kakuva said his team is looking forward to their Sunday clash with current NPL log leader Tigers, who have thus far not tasted defeat.
“We played a tough opponent on Friday night and the Independence Stadium did not make it any easier on us with the pitch being very bumpy and our opponents playing log balls.
“But all I can say is we had a great second half and managed to score a goal that moved us to second place on the log. We are now resting today and looking forward to Sunday, when we will be the first team to collect maximum points against Tigers this season since all the teams failed to do that in the 12 games played in the league so far,” he said.
Tigers beat Civics 1-0 on Wednesday to extend their lead at the top of the log to eight points, have not lost a single game in the first half of the NPL.
Round 13 in the second half of the league will see them lock horns with their arch-rival Pirates at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Sunday at 15:00.
Saturday results:
Eleven Arrows 3-3 United Stars
Blue Waters 2-1 Julinho Sporting
Flamingoes 1-0 Young Chiefs
Mighty Gunners 1-4 Tura Magic
Black Africa 1-0 Rundu Chiefs
Tigers 1-0 Civics (played Wednesday)
