People are gatvol

Protests over poor service delivery are on the rise once again and only a fool would conclude that demonstrations of this nature aren&rsquo;t simply a result of failure by the authorities. Just this week Okahandja residents, led by fed-up pensioners, organised a sit-in at the municipality offices and prevented staff from entering the building. At this protest some made startling revelations of living without water and electricity for up to ten years. Residents also charged that they cannot acquire land because preference is given to property developers at the expense of the landless poor. The authorities are doing nothing to turn around this situation. Instead they are involved in petty politicking with their &lsquo;comrades&rsquo;. And you ask yourself why on earth would anyone in their right mind vote for a useless leader who doesn&rsquo;t provide them with water and electricity. Why should the poor always be robbed of basic services because of maladministration and corruption on the part of the authorities? Until when will we continue to subject our people to such suffering? As a nation we are already grappling with serious problems including high levels of poverty and it is sickening to see people suffering in a country they call home. To this we say that Okahandja councillors and those from other towns who have failed the nation should step down immediately because this is an emblematic of a crisis of poor governance in municipalities. Voters are disillusioned and are now gatvol with the status quo. Until the authorities admit to their failures and stop messing up, we are likely to witness widespread municipal service-delivery protests.
