More than 35 teachers have been trained as Kwata cricket coaches to date in the Kunene Region, regional cricket coordinator Wilhelm Tuhafeni said.
In an interview with Nampa, Tuhafeni said the training courses were recently conducted in Kamanjab and Khorixas as part of Cricket Namibia’s long-term goal to introduce the sport to communities.
Teachers from seven schools including high schools in the region received basic skills on how to coach kwata cricket.
“The teachers who received training will be expected to coach the skills they received to their learners for a period of two weeks in order to be awarded certificates of qualification of kwata cricket coaching. The kwata cricket programme will be coached during physical education periods during normal school hours,” he said.
Tuhafeni added that to ensure the programme and the teachers are providing effective coaching sessions, there will be regular visits to these towns on a monthly basis, while school cricket structures were also implemented to ensure cricket is well managed.
Measures in place
“Thus, a school cricket coordinator was selected from each school. The coordinators are excited about their new roles and are looking forward to ensuring cricket produces positive results in the long run,” he said.
He added that Cricket Namibia has measures in place to ensure the future of cricket-playing youngsters is secured, with development programmes.
“There will be quarterly training camps and age group tournaments to provide kids with advanced knowledge and skills to progress to the next level to be able to play for age-group national teams in future,” he said.
