Otjiwarongo vies for Town of the Year
Otjiwarongo is a very unique town, and serves as a gateway to the north, south, west and east of the country. Otjiwarongo has a rich diverse culture and boasts an internationally acclaimed cheetah farm, in addition it is surrounded by Okonjima, the home of the Africat Foundation which rehabilitates cheetah and leopard.
For a town with no perennial river Otjiwarongo is home to many crocodiles namely Nile crocodiles which are bred at the Crocodile ranch. The town is surrounded by the major lodges which attract tourists to the area and is a gateway to the legendary Etosha National Park. It will be the first town in Namibia to be powered by green electricity with a solar plant coming and is home to Namibia’s only pharmaceutical plant Fabupharm.
In this year alone, nine new extensions with a combined total of approximately 2 500 plots, (residential, industrial, business and institutional), are currently being serviced through public-private-partnership (PPP) arrangements, as well as in-house. This then means Otjiwarongo will soon have mass serviced land available for its residents.
A new cement factory is also on its way.
The new Ombili settlement area was provided with free wheelie bins, something that has never been done before by any municipality. The provision of wheelie bins in the informal settlement is a pilot project and if it is a success it will be rolled out to the whole informal settlement.
Fast facts: Otjiwarongo is the cheetah capital of the world; it has the oldest locomotive in the country, Locomotive No 41, last used for scheduled traffic in 1960; and Otjiwarongo is home to two major football teams the Mighty Gunners and the Life Fighters who have been promoted from second division to premier league.
