A nine-year-old girl who organised a fun-day event for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) at Outjo has qualified for the Miss Little Grand Namibia pageant set for Saturday in the capital.
Nicole Kharigus and 40 other children from different regions will compete in different categories of this competition.
National Director for Miss Grand Namibia Magnolia Kuhanga told Nampa the four categories are Miss Little Grand, for children between eight to ten years old; Miss Pre-Teen for girls between 11 to 14 years; Miss Teen for girls between 15 and 17 years; and the main category - Miss Grand Namibia for girls between 18 and 28 years.
Kuhanga established Miss Grand Namibia in 2015.
She said the purpose of the show is to groom young girls in becoming confident community leaders who will publicly talk against gender-based violence all over the country.
For a contestant to qualify for the finals, she must have actively participated in a community development project.
Kharigus qualified for the finals after she had successfully distributed over 40 lunch packs to OVC at the Otjiwarongo Multi-Purpose Community Centre herself. She also organised a fun day for more than 200 OVC at the Orphanage Fina Grace Project in Outjo, where she spoke about the need to love and give care to children.
Kharigus, with the help of her mother Ingrid Kharigus, also hired a jumping castle for the orphans at Outjo and treated them to lunch.
The winners in each category will have opportunity to represent Namibia at different platforms: Miss Grand International later this year; Miss Teen International 2017; or Little Miss Universe 2017.
The exact date and venues for these international pageants will be announced later.
