Oshikunde School renamed after late Education Minister

President Hifikepunye Pohamba has called on Namibian learners to do their best at all times as the nation expects them to become critical thinkers and acquire problem-solving skills through education. Pohamba made the call last week at the official inauguration of Dr Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School (SSS) in the Ohangwena Region's Ohakafiya Circuit. The school is named after the late Education Minister Dr Abraham Iyambo, who died in the United Kingdom in 2012. The school caters for Grades 11 and 12 and was previously known as Oshikunde Senior Secondary School, but was renamed after community members agreed to do so following the construction of additional hostel blocks earlier this year. A total of 404 Grade 11 and 12 learners were enrolled at Dr Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School in February 17 this year. “I urge you today to remain focused on preparing for the upcoming year-end examinations. Share your study skills with one another and embrace the gift of learning,” the President said. He encouraged the learners to make use of the resources at their disposal by performing well in the examinations and to commit themselves to achieving their academic goals. The Ohangwena Region was rated fourth in the 2013 National Examinations for Grade 10 and Grade 12 nationally. “Now, more than ever, you need to ensure that you support the Ohangwena regional improvement strategies by studying very hard and continuing to improve,” Pohamba said. President Pohamba also advised them to emulate the late Dr Iyambo who was hard working and committed to his work. “Today, we are not only celebrating the construction and official opening of a brand new secondary school, we are also remembering the legacy of Dr Abraham Iyambo, a dynamic and passionate former Minister of Education,” he said. The President and the Minister of Education, Dr David Namwandi used the same platform to announce the death of Iyambo’s mother, the 82-year-old Meekulu Helena Penofina Gabriel. Gabriel, who lived at Omagongati Village in the Oshana Region, passed away a day before the inauguration of Dr Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School. OSHIKUNDE NAMPA
