The Ongwediva town council has announced that it will provide sewer reticulation to the residents of Extension 15.

The project, which will cover 310 erven, started in May and will end in November 2021.

The town’s mayor, Talah Shalyefu, said this project came as a result of consultations between the residents of Extension 15 and the town council over the past years.

Shalyefu said the N$8.2 million project was awarded to Larissa Investment.

He said residents and homeowners in Extension 15 will be experiencing service interruptions from time to time during the project.

“The council is requesting them to provide full support and cooperation to the contractor in order to ensure timely completion of the project. This project will allow residents to connect to the sewer system thereby ceasing to make use of septic tanks in the area,” Shalyefu said.

He reminded residents that the municipality is committed to make basic services such as water, sewerage, electricity and land available within in the limits of available resources.

Payment holiday

Shalyefu said the council handed over a new sewer system to the residents of Reception 3 in August 2020 and further implemented a payment holiday on sewer connection applications.

He said when the payment holiday ended in January 2021 with only 57 residents having benefited, the council decided to extend it by six months, to November 2021.

“Our target is to improve sanitation in Ongwediva through the provision of sewer reticulation in locations without sewer reticulation. Therefore, I call upon all residents with sewer reticulation installed in their areas to apply for sewer connection free of charge before the payment holiday lapses in November this year,” Shalyefu said.

Ongwediva municipality spokesperson Jackson Muma urged residents to visit the town council to apply for sewer connections.

Muma said the usual price after the payment holiday would be N$2 170.
