Police in the Omusati region are asking for public assistance to identify a one-month-old baby whose body was found on Friday at the Okahao town council’s dumping site located in the nearby village of Uukwalumbe.
Commissioner Titus Shikongo said the baby was killed and his body was placed in a plastic bag and discarded in a rubbish bin.
Shikongo said the plastic bag was discovered by local people who scavenge for used items at the dump.
“Please, we are sharing this sensitive visual material to assist our readers to recollect and identify the deceased, not necessarily by face but by the clothes. Please can we blur the face due to the sensitivity of the matter,” he urged.
Shikongo said the body was transported to the Okahao police mortuary for post-mortem to be conducted as investigations continue.
He said it was not known whether the suspect is a resident of Okahao or a person from the surrounding villages or towns who travelled to the town in order to conceal the crime.
"It is therefore our humble appeal to all public members in Okahao town, surrounding villages, towns, settlements in Omusati region and beyond to recollect if any person who had a baby boy of an approximate age, and who live or lived in their surrounding areas, has not been seen in the past few days. Please come forward with such information to help the police trace and identify the suspect in order to bring the culprit to book,” Shikongo said.
He added that all tip-offs would be welcome and information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Anyone with information should contact Warrant Officer Shikongo at 081 203 1477, or 081 359 4506, or the nearest police station.
