Ompunda village launches small-scale green scheme
The community of Ompunda village in the Oshana Region’s Okaku Constituency launched a small-scale green scheme project which will produce fruit and vegetables for own consumption and the local market.
Named Kambalona Agricultural Project, it is the brainchild of Hosea Ndengu, and is expected to produce maize, sweet potatoes, spinach, onions, tomatoes and other fruit and vegetables. Another villager, Thomas Abed, donated a three-hectare portion of his land for the project.
“We are heeding the call of Government to be self-sufficient by coming up with this initiative and we hope it will contribute to poverty alleviation in the country,” said the project’s spokesperson Mathews Kalangula.
Kalangula indicated that Kambalona started as a backyard garden at Ndengu’s house some eight years ago and its members recently realised the need to expand it to the rest of the community of Ompunda village and the surrounding areas.
He noted that the project intends to donate fruit and vegetable plants to 15 community members to start their own backyard gardens at their respective homesteads.
Ndengu revealed that they recently donated 79 seedlings to the office of the councillor of the constituency, Gerson Kapenda, to be handed over to vulnerable schools in the constituency.
Kambalona project in June this year also donated 131 fruit trees to 12 schools in the Ondangwa Urban Constituency. - Nampa
