OTJIWARONGO

The victims of a horrific accident north of Okahandja that killed 16 people early in December have all been identified.

Many had burned beyond recognition and police invited relatives to submit DNA samples to help identify the bodies.

The accident occurred during the early hours of 10 December 2021, 14 km outside Okahandja on the road to Otjiwarongo.

A Toyota Quantum minibus and a sedan collided head-on, leading to both vehicles bursting into flames.

Victims

The deceased’s names were announced at a memorial service held in their honour on 28 December at Onakaheke village in the Omusati region.

They are two-week-old David Shalipo, Johaness Amakali (37), sisters Josephine Shapaka (45) and Hilya Shapaka (42), Eliakim Amakali (70), Immanuel Shetunyenga (55), Ignatius Mungolo (47) and Leonard Ndeliimona (40).

Other victims are Phillipus Nangolo (13), Andreas Nekwaya (31), David Kadhila (30), cousins Jonathan Shishomba (9) and Abisai Shetunyenga (8) and sisters Sylvia Taanyanda (4) and Bertha Taanyanda (11).

Repetance needed

Omusati governor Erginus Endjala spoke at the memorial service.

He said the tragedy called for repentance. He urged family members not to see the loss as punishment from God but rather as God speaking to them in His way.

“I want to encourage fellow drivers to be cognisant of other road users. It is imperative to drive under the speed limit and avoid tragedies like this one. Otherwise, we will continue to lose lives as a result of road accidents.”

On behalf of the people of the Omusati region, he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
