The Ohangwena police yesterday afternoon arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly hacked a 40-year-old woman to death with a machete at Omuyekadi village.

The man reportedly lashed out after he was confronted over a stolen goat carcass found in his room and also seriously injured a neighbour in the process.

According to police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the incident happened on Monday at around 16:00 when the suspect, who is allegedly mentally challenged, hacked the victim, 40-year-old Olivia Ndateelela Teofelus, to death with a machete. The two are related.

Horrific crime

A preliminary police report indicated that the horrific crime was the result of a confrontation involving the suspect, the victim and a 51-year-old female neighbour.

He attacked the duo with the machete, killing his niece.

The neighbour sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Eenhana State Hospital, the police report said.

The suspect reportedly fled after committing the crime, but was later arrested at Onamahoka village.

Police investigations continue.
