Nujoma’s birthday a tribute to his legacy
It was a full house today at the 87th birthday celebrations of Founding President Sam Nujoma at the Etunda Trust farm near Otavi.
The house was packed with people from all walks of life, including politicians, members of the diplomatic corps, businesspeople, friends, family and private individuals keen to pay homage to Nujoma.
In addition, under the theme of ‘A day of rededication to service’, hundreds of thousands of Namibian dollars was pledged towards Nujoma’s charitable works, the Etunda Primary School and clinic in addition to supporting Namibians studying medicine abroad.
The festivities were marked by song and dance, poetry and a number of guest speakers who paid tribute to the role Nujoma has played in the country’s history. The founding president was showered with gifts, including a bottle of port dating back to his birth year, 1929, and a photograph depicting him as a young man next to revolutionary fighter Che Guevara.
The lavish birthday bash today was preceded on Friday night by a storytelling event, centered around a bonfire, based on a traditional African ritual called ‘Ohungi’.
General Martin Shalli, spoke at the event today and said of Nujoma: “We shall always remember your contribution to peace, democracy, rule of law and nation building.”
