NSC allocates funds
The Namibia Football Association's (NFA) international participation budget has been reduced from close to N$10 million to N$3.3 million this year.
The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday announced the allocation of funds to all its affiliated sport codes.
Codes in category A will each receive N$50 000, category B N$30 000, and category C N$15 000 for administration.
The category A codes are athletics, cricket, football, boxing, rugby, hockey and volleyball.
The A codes will get an additional international participation grant. Football will get N$3.3 million, while athletics, boxing, netball and cricket will receive N$150 000 for international competitions.
Volleyball and hockey will receive N$100 000 each for international competitions, while N$500 000 has been allocated to rugby.
N$890 000 will be allocated to category B and C sports for international participation. That money will remain with the NSC and the codes will have to request money every time they plan to participate in international competitions.
NSC chief administrator Simataa Mwiya said: “As we all know our budget has been reduced from N$38 million to N$21.6 million. This has forced us to allocate the funds in the way we did.
“We do not know if we are going to survive the whole year, and therefore we urge all stakeholders to try and find other means to source funds.
“Thirty percent of the money that was allocated to us by the ministry of sport will stay with the commission for its operations.”
Fifty-six sport federations and four umbrella bodies are affiliated to the NSC.
A percentage of funds from the NSC's budget will be allocated to the umbrella bodies.
Mwiya said although the NSC had allocated the funds, the commission was not in possession of the full N$21.6 million granted by the government. Therefore, money would be disbursed to the lower categories before the category A codes would receive their funds.
