NPC's Rundu scouting session a success: Hamukwaya
The National Paralympic Committee's Kavango East scouting session was a success, NPC secretary-general Michael Hamukwaya has said.
The NPC, in partnership with the ministry of sport, is scouting for female athletes with disabilities in the Oshana, //Karas and Kavango regions.
Their first session took place at the Eluwa Special School at Ongwediva on 26 and 27 July, where young female athletes between the ages of 13 and 26 years were identified.
The second scouting session was held at Rundu in Kavango East on Thursday and Friday and three female athletes were selected – Eveline Hausana, Justina Kapanga and Maria Simon.
They stand a chance of being included in the national team after their final training session in Windhoek later this year, where they will join the rest of the athletes selected from the Oshakati and Keetmanshoop training camps.
Hamukwaya told Nampa that the programme was a huge success thanks to the good support the scouting team received from the regional sport office.
“This type of collaboration with the regional sport offices makes these programmes run smoothly and bear fruit,” he said.
He added that the NPC was grateful for the Coca-Cola sponsorship and for the transport offered by the ministry's directorate of sport.
“It's not easy to recruit female athletes in Namibia but it's motivating to hear and see that the regions we visited with this programme answered our call of wanting to include more women in sport, especially in Paralympic sports in Namibia,” Hamukwaya said.
The third scouting session will be held at Keetmanshoop this month.
