NPC targets female athletes
Namibia Paralympic Committee (NPC) has embarked on a journey to get more female athletes involved in Paralympic sport.
Secretary-general Michael Hamukwaya over the weekend expressed concern with the few females participating in the sport.
Apart from notable faces like former Paralympic gold medallist Johanna Benson and sensational runner Lahja Ishitile, very few Paralympic female athletes have grown to prominence.
The NPC will therefore be touring to different regions in order to scout for female athletes.
“We are starting with the northern region before and will travel all the way through the country to the south.
“Namibia has been struggling with female Paralympic athletes and it is now our duty to get hold of the athletes and the potential talent in these regions.
“We will hold our first session at Eluwa Special School in Ongwediva this week starting on 26 July before moving to Katima Mulilo,” Hamukwaya said.
The NPC's hunt for female athletes will then be concluded in Keetmanshoop.
“We promise that we will visit other towns and regions next year to get more female athletes involved.
“It is important that we have a vast representation of females at the next world Paralympic games.”
