No water payment relief

ILENI NANDJATOOSHAKATIOshana governor Elia Irimari says people should keep paying their water bills during the Covid-19 state of emergency.The government has ordered the reconnection of suspended water accounts by all local authorities during the lockdown period, but that does not mean the outstanding debt will be cancelled.Irimari said the Oshakati town council has reconnected 334 suspended accounts, Ondangwa 237 and Ongwediva 124.“This is household water supply that was disconnected due to debt. As per the government order, the old debts will not be mixed with the current provision and this does not also mean that it is a water payment relief for every Namibian.“Those who have means must continue paying for their water consumption, while those who got their water reconnected must also not abuse the gesture,” said Irimari.The government issued the order as part of its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The idea is to make sure that people have clean water to wash with in order to curb the spread of the disease. Rural water supplyIrimari said since water supply in urban areas has been taken care of, the regional government is now identifying rural communities without water supply.“Efforts are now to identify communities without water in the region and I am calling on the public to provide the information to the regional council,” Irimari said.According to NamWater, this automatic water reconnection applies only to local authorities and not to private customers and those under the rural water supply system.NamWater urges private customers to pay their water bills to avoid disconnection.Rural water supply customers whose water has been disconnected are advised to get in touch with their regional councillors to take up their cases with NamWater.
