More than 300 learners from Mangetti Dune Combined School in the Tsumkwe constituency have yet to return to face-to-face learning since March.

So far, only learners in grades seven to nine have returned to school.

According to a source, this is due to the social distancing regulations rolled out countrywide, which proved impossible to maintain at the small hostel facility shared by Mangetti Dune learners as well as those from nearby villages and settlements.Principal Menesia Gomes confirmed that learners had yet to return to school, but directed any further questions to the circuit inspector.

Grootfontein circuit inspector Eliakim Hamulenge confirmed that the learners have been out of school, claiming that Mangetti Dune Combined School is not the only school where learners have not returned.

“Attendance is in two forms,” Hamulenge said, adding that teaching and learning can take place inside and out of the classroom.

“The bottom line here is teaching and learning has been continuing. It's only that it took a different route whereby learners were assessed differently.”

According to Hamulenge, learning materials are still being distributed for the learners to continue learning.

“We went out, we were driving to villages and these materials, we gave them to the parents so that they reach out to the learners.”

He added that when delivering a consignment, previously delivered material is collected. These activities will make up the learners' final marks for promotion to the next grade, he said. Assessment activities designed by teachers were also distributed to parents.

“Programmes were in place, parents were communicated to as to when to collect, when to submit. And the teachers have also been attending to these activities in terms of marking,” he said.
