MTC HopSol Youth football league's Harald Fulle has assured the public that the organisers maintain strict health and safety measures at all matches to minimise the risk of coronavirus infection.

The youth league, which resumed after the end of the state of emergency, has seen young footballers battling each other out for top spots every weekend.

However, many of these players are unable to stay in isolation due to the costs associated with the isolation requirements.

Many of these players also have to attend school during the week and it therefore makes it impossible for them to stay isolation.

Doing the best they can

Pressed for time, the MTC HospSol officials say they are doing anything in their power to get the season concluded by December.

“We are doing the best we can to make sure that all players are safe when competing in the league.

“One of the things we have cut out is the attendance of any spectators at the fields.

“We screen the players before entering the field and those that have high temperatures are sent back home.

“I can also confirm that we have not had any case from our players or officials because everyone is doing the best they can to keep safe,” Fulle said.

In August, the organisers decided to postpone the league.

This was after President Hage Geingob's announcement that Namibia had reverted to stage three of the lockdown regulations due to the increasing number of coronavirus cases at the time.

Top quality

Fuller added that he was delighted with the quality of play by the young ones, who may one day become professional players.

Since its inception in 2017, the programme has focused on developing young football players in sport, academics and social behaviour.

The league this year received an annual sponsorship worth N$500 000 from MTC, which will run for a period of three years.
