Founding president Sam Nujoma will not be celebrating his 91st birthday with the usual fanfare this year, with his office taking the necessary steps to adhere to the coronavirus guidelines on public gatherings, his personal assistant Paul Shipale announced on Friday.
Nujoma's birthday on 12 May has become a celebratory annual event, which sees scores of well-wishers usually flock to his Etunda farm to celebrate the day.
Nujoma also usually receives pledges and donations for the Etunda farm school and clinic.
Explaining the decision not to celebrate Nujoma's birthday with the usual annual gathering, Shipale said people of his age are especially susceptible to contracting the coronavirus.
Given that the elderly are in the vulnerable category of people susceptible to being easily infected by this virus, the Office of the Founding Father and First President of the Republic of Namibia hereby wishes to inform the Namibian nation and friendly countries that for this year's 91st birthday anniversary, there will be no public gathering to celebrate the occasion,” the statement said.
Shipale encouraged anyone with congratulatory messages and well-wishes to send it to the former president's office.
