Murder accused Phillipus Hafeni Haihambo (54) was remanded in custody when he made his first appearance before the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court.

He was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Hanguwo Otillie Mwateuvi (36), read along with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act.

According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu of the Erongo police the murder took place on Sunday evening around 18:30 in the Kuisebmond shack the couple were sharing.

“It is alleged that he stabbed her in the neck, killing her instantly. It is not yet known what caused the suspect to commit such a crime. He was immediately arrested after the murder,” Iikuyu said.

During his court appearance on Tuesday, prosecutor Maggy Shinyagaya opposed bail in light of the seriousness of the crime.

Haihambo indicated that he would apply for legal aid.

Magistrate Rhivermo Williams postponed the case to 30 October for further investigation and informed Haihambo of his right to bring a formal bail application before that date.
