No bail for hit-and-run accused

A woman implicated in a hit-and-run incident on the B2 road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay on Tuesday night made her first court appearance in the harbour town yesterday.
Charlet de Bruyn (34) was denied bail by Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis.
Her case was postponed to 11 February for further investigations.
According deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the accused was charged with culpable homicide, failure to ascertain the nature of an injured person as well as fleeing from an accident scene.
“De Bruyn was travelling in a Ford Ranger double cab bakkie from Walvis Bay towards Langstrand around 20:50 on Tuesday when she allegedly bumped an unidentified middle-aged man who is suspected to have been crossing the road. Unfortunately, he died at the scene.”
The accused allegedly drove away from the scene and was later apprehended at her residence at Langstrand.
Llanna Fouche represented De Bruyn, while the State was represented by Tuihaleni Hilikuete, who opposed bail on the grounds that the accused is a flight risk and the offence is serious.
“The deceased has also not been identified and investigations are still outstanding.”
Fouche said she has no idea why the State would oppose bail “as this was a traffic accident and we are in the Covid-19 pandemic, so there is nowhere for the accused to flee”.
De Bruyn was remanded to custody.
Mystery man
Commissioner Ikuyu confirmed that the deceased has not been identified yet.
“No identification documents were found on the deceased. He is light in complexion and was wearing a red hoodie, black jeans, black sneakers and a black T-shirt. He might be in his mid-30s.”
Iikuyu requested anyone who can help to identify the victim to contact on 081 246 4757, detective inspector Michael Ambambi at 081 640 1600 or the nearest police station.
