Four die in truck accident
Four people died after the gears and brakes of a heavy-duty truck failed, causing it to roll backward and collide with a bakkie at Epukiro Post 3 in the Omaheke Region on Friday. Police spokesperson Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi said the accident occurred at around 14:00. He said the truck had been transporting cement and was driving uphill when its gears and brakes failed. This caused the truck to roll back and collide with bakkie, causing the deaths of 27-year-old Yvonne Kahevita, 15-year-old Uvatera Kaunatjike, five-year-old Mbamuno Kahevita and one-year-old Puumue Kavari.
Four other passengers in the bakkie escaped with minor injuries, while the driver of the truck and his passenger were unharmed.
Angolans eye Omaheke for business
Economic ties between the Omaheke Region and the agriculture-rich Angolan province of Cuando-Cubango could soon be on the cards, following a visit of top Angolan provincial executives to Gobabis. The delegation, led by Cuando-Cubango Governor Francisco Higino Lopes Carneiro, comprised top executives in the provincial government, as well as businesspeople. Given the similarities between Namibia's 'cattle country' and the Cuando-Cubango province - where the majority of its residents practice animal husbandry - the Omaheke Region has become ideal for the business interests of the Angolans. At a brief meeting between the two parties, the Cuando-Cubango governor expressed hope that the two regions could enter into economic ties in the interest of bringing development to the respective regions. Carneiro said the two regions could benefit from each other in the exchange of expertise and experience in the field of livestock production.
Vehicle registration syndicate uncovered
The Namibian police have uncovered a syndicate involved in the illegal registering of imported vehicles at Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region.
Three suspects made their first appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The suspects - 30-year-old David Kosenge, 25-year-old Jekonia Indongo and 33-year-old Theofilus Nakanwe - were arrested last Wednesday, and appeared on charges of fraud before Magistrate Vicky Nicoladis.
All three suspects were denied bail and the matter was postponed until this Thursday for further investigations.
Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu said on Sunday that the suspects unlawfully forged the application process of registering vehicles at the Namibia Traffic Information System (NaTIS) offices in Walvis.
