Drug dealing suspect granted bail An alleged drug dealer, who was arrested during a sting operation by members of the Namibian Police Drug Law Enforcement Unit last week, has been granted bail of N$15 000. The 32-year-old Charlton Blaauw, alias 'Shoetas', was granted bail by Windhoek magistrate Hileni Kavara at the end of the hearing of his formal bail application yesterday. The bail was granted with no bail conditions attached on it. Blaauw was allegedly caught last week with 10 units of crack cocaine and 2,5g of cocaine during an undercover operation involving the Chief of NamPol's Drug Law Enforcement Unit, Deputy Commissioner Hermie van Zyl. The State, led by prosecutor Erick Naikaku opposed the granting of bail on the grounds that while out on bail for previous offences involving cocaine, Blaauw kept on plying his alleged trade. Aussenkehr residents want proper houses There is a need to provide better houses for employees at grape farms in the Aussenkehr settlement, as most of them are currently sleeping in dwellings made of reeds. This is the view of Karasburg Constituency Councillor Paulus Ephraim. He said there are currently more than 100 permanent grape farmworkers who applied and qualified for the government's Build Together housing programme in that settlement this year. We want to get rid of reeds' accommodation, and build proper houses for our people, the councillor said. He added that in an effort to achieve better and bigger houses, he approached the employers of grape workers with the request to assist in building houses for them. Police impound illegal taxis Traffic officers last week impounded 22 sedan cars that were allegedly operating as taxis at Oshakati and Ongwediva. Oshana Region police chief, Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, revealed this to the media at Oshakati this week. Kashihakumwa indicated that the drivers of the impounded cars were issued with traffic tickets with a total value of N$91 720. A 23rd vehicle was also impounded, as its driver was not in possession of proper transportation documents when he was approached. This driver was, however, excused after presenting his legal public transportation papers later. Reports by Nampa
