New TV programme to celebrate cancer warriors

Sanlam Namibia, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and television personality Nancy Muinjo have teamed up to create a television show that is to highlight inspiring stories about the fight against cancer. The television show titled ‘There’s A Can In Cancer with Chi-Chi’ will profile different individuals telling their stories of struggle and triumph after being diagnosed with cancer. The six episodes will be aired every Wednesday at 18:30 on NBC. Muinjo was diagnosed with cancer and has been a symbol of hope and courage for cancer patients all over Namibia for her brave and fierce fight. The television and radio personality was diagnosed six years ago. After initially thinking that she had won her battle, the disease has resurfaced. In an interview with Namibian Sun in 2013, Muinjo vowed not to give up the fight. “There is my faith in God and the fact that I'm alive is good enough reason to continue fighting. There is life wrapped in every breath,” she said at the time. Sanlam Namibia, which donates over N$250 000 annually to the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) through its Sanlam Cancer Golf Challenge, sponsored the television show to the tune of N$100 000. At the launch yesterday, Sanlam’s General Manager of Public and Corporate Support, Evans Simataa, said the fight against cancer is a cause that is very dear to the company, because they believe it is among the diseases that need unwavering attention from all sectors of society. “We decided to embark on a television show for those with cancer to talk to the nation about life after cancer diagnosis. Sanlam continues to show how a life assurance company can play a significant part in building a nation,” he said. Simataa said the show celebrates brave members of our society, who have been living positive lives as cancer warriors. Expressing joy at having Muinjo on board, he says, “Sanlam approached Chi-Chi to spearhead the new initiative; we were thrilled that she came on board without any hesitation. She has been battling breast cancer for the last six years. She has always shown the victorious end of her condition and never allows it to interfere with all that she has achieved. She is a household brand and many Namibians look up to her.” NBC’s Chief Commercial Officer, Alex Shimuafeni, highlighted the importance of the television programme. He said it will bring the reality of cancer into the homes of Namibians with the aim of sharing knowledge. The first episode will air on June 3. WINDHOEK GORDON JOSEPH
