NBC unaudited before 2010
Efforts to normalise the broadcaster started gaining traction with the appointment of former NBC director general Albertus Aochamub, whom Similo said started putting in place measures to ensure that statements would be audited.

NBC director general Stanley Similo this week informed lawmakers that the broadcaster’s financial statements had never been audited prior to 2010, with the process only starting officially in 2013.
He made the comments while responding to questions raised during a public hearing into NBC’s affairs. The committee questioned management on the audited report for the 2018 financial year prepared by the Office of the Auditor General.
Similo told lawmakers that the NBC did not have material from which to prepare audits prior to 2010.
“Up until 2010, there literally were no systems that properly managed in terms of where the organisation should be going to,” Similo told Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts chairperson Dudu Murorua.
Efforts to normalise the broadcaster started gaining traction with the appointment of former NBC director general Albertus Aochamub, whom Similo said started putting in place measures to ensure that statements would be audited.
“With the appointment of the then director general [Albertus Aochamub], who is now the ambassador abroad, that is only when the issues of audits were given attention to. Roundabout 2013,” Similo informed Murorua.
The NBC had struggled to submit its audit reports also because documentation needed to deliver audited statements could not be found.
“Part of the problem was not being able to find documentation that would support a cause. When I came in, we were still struggling to find relevant documentation,” he said.
“The problem they were facing at the time was opening balances and there was this account called the clean-up account, it was a result of not knowing what was happening.”
