WINDHOEK

The Naute Dam’s sluices were opened for the first time this year after it received strong inflow over the weekend.

According to NamWater, releases of 400 cubic meters of water started at 09:00 yesterday morning when the level of the dam stood at 111%.

“Inflow subsided, but the level of the dam needs to be reduced to approximately 100%,” NamWater said.

The releases would have taken approximately seven hours. Last Monday, the level of the dam was 80.4%.

Meanwhile, the Namibia Meteorological Services have warned that widespread thundershowers are expected over the Khomas and Hardap regions, with flash floods most likely today. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions.

Another train derails

Over the weekend, a TransNamib train travelling between Aus and Goabeb derailed after heavy rains sank the railway line.

According to the railway operator, the locomotive and four wagons capsized in the process.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, 15 January. No serious injuries were reported.

In other news, two people escaped unscathed on Saturday after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by the strong current of the Guruchab River, about 40km from Keetmanshoop on the Aroab Road. This river flows into the Fish River and is dammed by the Naute.
