Nampol ladies a cut above the rest
The Khomas Nampol women's soccer team have presented their trophy to regional commander, Commissioner Joseph Shikongo, after winning the Namibian Women in Sport Association (Nawisa) tournament recently at the Unam stadium.
They defeated Unam Bokkies 3-1.
Shikongo was accompanied by senior police officers including Deputy Commissioner Abner Agas and sport officer, Inspector Kauna Nyambali, when he received the trophy at the Windhoek police station.
V-Power took the third spot, after beating Nust 7-6 on penalties in the third-place playoff.
Nampol walked away with a trophy, N$1 500 and 18 gold medals.
Meanwhile, Unam Bokkies collected N$1 000 and 18 silver medals, while V-Power went home with N$500 and 18 bronze medals. Shikongo congratulated the players and assured them of his support, saying he has an open-door policy where everyone should be treated equally and with dignity.
The police chief encouraged the team to prepare well in advance for an international tournament next year, saying the players should feel proud to represent Namibia, as well as the police. Nawisa will host the international tournament here in 2020 in which various women soccer clubs from neighbouring countries will take part including South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, Botswana and Zambia. The tournament will see NamPol, V-Power and Unam Bokkies representing Namibia.
Nampol team captain Magdalena Paulus said the club has a pool of talented players, who worked very hard to emerge as the champions, despite having limited time to prepare for the tournament.
Nampol ladies' coach Aini Katanga said the international matches will require full match fitness, both physically and mentally, and that they will make Namibia proud at home.
