Namibians hail Mboma’s latest award

JESSE JACKSON KAURAISA WINDHOEK News that Namibian sprint sensation Christine Mboma was voted as BBC African Sports Personality of the Year for 2021 has been received with overwhelming joy by many Namibians.Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) chief administrator Freddy Mwiya was overjoyed that Mboma became the second Namibian and the first woman in the award’s history.He is confident that more investments will come to Namibian sport due to awards of such nature.“We are super proud of our girl Christine Mboma for yet another iconic achievement.“This is definitely a great start for the year given that winning such an award for Mboma will serve as a motivation for her to go for more,” Mwiya said.The NSC chief is also adamant that Mboma’s exploits will motivate many other Namibians.The 2020 Olympics 200m silver medallist had to navigate a difficult childhood of poverty to become a global sensation in a short period of time.“Mboma’s exploits should encourage corporate Namibia to invest more in athletes and sports in general.“I wish her and all Namibians the very best in 2022 as we attempt to continue with another flourishing year in sports,” Mwiya remarked. The Namibian sprinter beat Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon, South African para-athlete Ntando Mahlangu, Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker to the award.Mboma’s close friend and running partner Beatrice Masilingi also took to social media to congratulate her friend.“Congratulations are in order for my sister after being crowned as BBC Africa Sports Personality of the Year. I am proud of you,” Masilingi posted on her official Facebook page.Namibia’s legendary sprinter Frankie Fredericks, who won the award in 1993, also congratulated Mboma on his official Facebook page.“Congratulations Christine Mboma for being crowned BBC African Sports Personality of the Year,” Fredericks posted.Mboma’s coach, Henk Botha, shared the same sentiments, stating that he was proud of what the athlete had achieved.GratefulThe year 2021 proved to be a dream one as Mboma went on to claim the Olympic 200m silver medal, a Diamond League crown and an under-20 gold medal over 200m.Mboma also broke the under-20 record over the 200m distance on several occasions last year.“I am happy to have won this award and I dedicate it to all Namibians,” Mboma said after her victory.
