Namibian Sun's spoof NPL awards

WINDHOEK-HECTOR MAWONGA With the 2012/2013 Namibia Premier League (NPL) awards set to take centre stage tomorrow, it is time to look at some alternative awards for the players, as decided by Namibian Sun. 1. Best Dribbler Award This award would go to the football player that exhibits an ability to skilfully get past opponents. This season, Tigers' Pineas Jacob and Civics' Wangu Gome were definitely eye-catching, but the winner would have to be Eleven Arrows' Enrico Hoebeb, who seems to have the ball virtually stuck to his feet when running at opponents. 2. The Madala Award This award would typically go to experienced players that served their respective clubs outstandingly this season. Guys like Civics' Bobby Kaapama, Blue Waters' Fisha Kalimba and Black Africa's Hartman Toromba all came close to winning this one. But this season, Rundu Chiefs' Mogale Naruseb, a former Brave Warriors player, proved to be the most instrumental for his team, as he helped the NPL rookies to stay in the elite league thanks to some inspired performances in the centre of midfield. 3. Biggest Non-event At the start of every season, there are certain players that are touted as potential key factors in the league race and this award would be dedicated to the ones that ultimately fail to rise to the hype. This one definitely goes to the out and out strikers at African Stars, Ikuaterua Tjozongoro, Clarence Foroma and William Chilufya. These three only scored five goals between them, with the team instead having to rely on Bradley Wermann and Riaan Cloete, both of whom are creative players normally playing just behind the strikers. 4. Chance-Waster The game of football is all about goals, but unfortunately there are players that regularly miss the target completely when it looks easy to score. This award is a tie between Mighty Gunners' Harold Ochurub and Ramblers' Heinrich Kazeurua. While both players are the two highest scorers in the NPL this season, the amount of chances they actually missed boggles the mind. Had they converted their chances, they would have undoubtedly had at least 20 goals to their respective names.
