The national women’s indoor hockey and junior wrestling teams, as well as a para-athlete, received a warm welcome yesterday from the minister of sport, after they returned from various competitions.

The hockey team took part in the Indoor Hockey World Cup in Germany, where they took ninth spot out of the 12 participating countries.

Namibia also won the top goal scorer award through Kiana Cormack. Cormack, who is just 16 years of age, scored nine goals at the World Cup.

The wrestling team returned from Nigeria, where they took part in the African Wrestling Championship. The young wrestlers returned with six bronze medals and one silver.

Para-athlete Mateus Angula won bronze at the para-swimming championships held in Kenya.

The newly appointed minister of sport Erastus Uutoni said the nation was proud of the performances of the hockey team.

“You played among countries that have active professional hockey leagues, but you overcame odds to give one of the best performances by a national team in an international sport event,” Uutoni said.

He also applauded the performances of the wrestlers and said the wrestling federation needs to nurture these boys, so that by Tokyo 2020, they can end the country’s medal drought at Summer Olympic Games.

The minister also shared positive words with Angula.

“You took up swimming two years ago, and yet within a period of two years you are one of the stars to look forward to at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games,” he said.

He further urged all sport federations in the country to spread their wings, as there are many athletes with talent waiting to be discovered.
