Namibia U-turns on Chan withdrawal

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has made a U-turn on its decision to withdraw the Brave Warriors from the African Nations Championship (Chan), following the Confederation of African Football's decision to postpone the tournament due to the coronavirus pandemic. Namibia's decision comes after the football association announced on Tuesday that it had withdrawn the national team from the competition, which was slated for Cameroon next month, amid fears of the coronavirus.NFA acting secretary-general Franco Cosmos said they knew they would make the decision to continue being part of the tournament if the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made the decision to postpone the competition.“The problem we had was that the tournament organisers were taking too long before they could make a decision and that is why we made Tuesday's decision following a directive from the Namibia Sports Commission and the head of state.“We care more about the safety of our players than anything else and that is why it was important to take that decision in the first place,” Cosmos said. Africa's governing football body on Tuesday afternoon issued a letter to football associations informing them about the postponement of the tournament.The decision was taken after a medical team had travelled to Cameroon to assess the health situation on the ground. In a statement issued by CAF acting secretary-general Abelonian Bah, the football body clarified its position on the tournament.“Following an inspection visit organised in Cameroon on 14 to 15 March by the CAF medical committee, it has appeared that the movement of populations has become extremely difficult. “Taking into account the serious health risks and challenges of international movement and the health and safety of football players, we inform you that the emergency committee of CAF has decided to postpone the competition until further notice,” the statement read.The committee also postponed the CAF 42nd elective general assembly, initially scheduled for 24 April in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
