Namibia is ranked among the 20 most dangerous countries in the world.

According to the 2021 Numbeo Crime Index, Namibia is the 14th most dangerous country globally. Last year, it was ranked 11th.

The index is a perceptions index based on survey responses where users are asked to score the level of crime in their country or city from bad to good.

The survey of more than 94 000 people deals with citizens’ levels of fear of violent crime, property being stolen, hate crimes based on ethnicity or religion, and corruption and bribery.

As a perception index, it does not deal with actual crime statistics, but rather how safe and secure citizens feel in their cities, for instance how safe they feel walking home.

Crime levels with a score lower than 20 are considered ‘very low’, levels between 20 and 40 are low, between 40 and 60 are moderate, between 60 and 80 are high and levels higher than 80 are very high.

If a country has a high safety score, it is considered very safe.

Living in fear

With a crime score of 64.22 and safety score of 34.11, Namibia is considered a high-crime, low-safety country.

Namibia is one of five African countries in the top most dangerous countries, ranked together with South Africa (third), Angola (12th), Nigeria (16th) and Libya (20th).

When looking at specific types of crimes people fear most in Namibia, worries about corruption and bribery, about being mugged or robbed and homes being broken into ranked the highest.

The overall perception is that crime has been increasing over the last three years.

Overall, Venezuela was ranked as the most dangerous country and Qatar as the safest.
