Swapo secretary-general Sophia Shaningwa yesterday praised the late Mandela Kapere as a staunch defender of the ruling party.
President Hage Geingob yesterday morning announced the death of Kapere, who had served as the chairperson of the National Youth Council (NYC) before he was appointed to serve in the National Assembly.
“It is hard. It is hard for all of us. My sincere condolences to the Kapere family, the children, the wife, mamma and dad and siblings of our late young leader. It is a difficult time for all of us. We should take courage and allow God to talk to us through him,” she said.
Shaningwa remembers Mandela as a straight talker who contributed to all activities of the party and a staunch supporter of the youth in the party structures.
Tributes
President Geingob hailed Kapere as an illustrious young man and a dynamic parliamentarian who played an important role in shaping the trajectory of youth leadership in Namibia.
The Landless People's Movement (LPM) expressed its shock and sadness at the sudden passing of Kapere.
“He was a youth activist and member of parliament who conducted himself with humility, empathy and diplomacy at all times.
“Kapere will be remembered as a gentle, giant-hearted person, who all throughout his political life exhibited emotional maturity, was fair, consistent and a critical thinker no matter whether he engaged his political opponents or comrades,” the party said.
Former Swapo youth league leader Job Amupanda said despite their differences, no one can take away the contributions that Mandela Kapere made in youth politics in Namibia.
“With the late Bankie F. Bankie, Ndeuli and others, he introduced me to Pan-Africanism when I was at university. May the soul of Mandela Kapere rest in eternal peace,” he said.
