Namibia is not a crime haven - govt
The international relations ministry has rejected a report by a British tabloid that Namibia is dangerous.
Following reports that the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to honeymoon in Namibia, the tabloid carried a report that said the country is “ridden with street crime and not a place to be at night”.
The couple were married on 19 May. The ministry in a Sunday media statement said the government wishes to put on record that the “poorly researched news article contains serious inaccuracies and suggestions and paints a negative and unfair picture of Namibia”.
“The government refutes the article as fabrication and misrepresentation of the good global reputation of Namibia as a tourist destination of choice,” said the statement.
It further said the article also completely ignored the peace and political stability the country has enjoyed since its independence on 21 March 1990.
“The tourism sector in the country has recorded phenomenal growth with tourists coming from all around the globe because of its stunning beauty and friendly tourist environment.”
The ministry said celebrities who have visited Namibia include Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who selected the country as the birthplace of their daughter Shiloh.
It also said actress Charlize Theron recently shot a movie on the Namibian coast, while former United Stated of America president George W. Bush and Alibaba founder Jack Ma also visited the country in 2017 as tourists.
“The government is mindful that no country is immune against crime. But Namibia is a safe country for its citizens and visitors alike and welcomes people from all walks of life,” the statement said.
