Nafwu lays fraud charge against Angula

WINDHOEK ELLANIE SMITBitter infighting is marring the Namibia Farm Workers Union (Nafwu), with allegations and counter-allegations flying thick and fast, while a fraud case has also been opened against the union's former secretary-general Alfred Angula this weekend.Angula who is now the acting secretary-general of National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) is allegedly still in possession of Nafwu property, including cheque books, a union vehicle and a financial report.Meanwhile, confusion has engulfed the union as two factions are both accusing each other of holding illegal meetings and are threatening each other with the law.In the one corner is union president Ronell de Jongh, who has been suspended by the national executive committee along with vice-president, Asser Hendrick.According to De Jongh an emergency central committee meeting was called on Friday. She says during this meeting it was resolved to suspend several members of the union, while a new acting general secretary was also appointed.She added that any communication or information from Rocco Nguvauva - the dismissed acting general secretary - Moses Kativa, Christa Kavara Frans Kgomo, Elaine Peters and Frans Kamati does not represent the views of the union and &ldquo;shall be deemed illegal, as they are no longer with Nafwu&rdquo;.However, Nguvauva said yesterday that the above-mentioned members form the majority of the NEC.He said that the NEC consists of eight members and the two members who are not serving at the moment are De Jongh and Hendrick, who are both suspended.According to Nguvauva another executive committee meeting was held on Saturday and Sunday, to which De Jongh, Asser and Angula were invited, but they failed to show up and it was therefore decided to take action against them.He said that it was during this meeting that it was decided to open a police case against Angula, while the meeting would also have provided an opportunity for De Jongh and Asser to defend themselves against their suspensions.Nguvauva stressed that De Jongh is on suspension and therefore does not have any power to act on behalf of Nafwu.He said that action will be taken against her. According to him, De Jongh is using the property of the union, including letterheads, while she was on suspension.Nguvauva said the executive committee meeting over the weekend chose Cornelius Ntelamo as acting president and Paulus Hausiku as acting vice-president.He further explained that it was agreed with Angula in August last year that all Nafwu assets he has in his possession should be returned, but this had not happened.&ldquo;It should be very clear that every cheque which is written by Angula after May 31, 2013 is illegal, and if we happen find it, legal action will be taken. The union is suffering. We don't have any access to the banks and he is using the money.&rdquo;Both De Jongh and Angula were taken for questioning last month by the police in connection with alleged questionable dealings at the union involving about N$430 000.It was stated recently that bank overdrafts amounting to N$215 000 were taken in the name of the union for personal use. In December 2011, a further N$65 000 was withdrawn, while N$150 000 was allegedly taken in December 2012.A petition was also handed over yesterday to the NUNW, dealing with Angula's refusal to handover Nafwu's financial report.
