GAM/TSUMKWE

The first tarred road at Gam is expected to be completed by February next year after it was officially commissioned on Tuesday.

The 3.5-kilometre road will start about 2 km outside Gam on the way to Tsumkwe.

The road was commissioned last week in the presence of regional governor James Uerikua, Tsumkwe constituency councillor Johannes Hausiku and various traditional authorities. The contractors are expected to start working this week.

The project, funded through the Roads Authority (RA), is part of a programme to prioritise the development of rural communities.

“Eventually the road will connect to Grootfontein but that is a future plan, not part of the development we are busy with now,” said the contractor, Andy Kotze, who is part of the Nexus construction team.

The tarred road will connect the main road in the settlement to basic services including the school, clinic, and veterinary clinic.

During a briefing with members of the community, Kotze said the team hoped to complete the project within five months.

Some dangerously sharp curves on the road from Gam to Tsumkwe will also be upgraded by the contractors.

“Usually on the corners, we put the road on super elevation so that means you will be able to drive on the road without overturning your car,” Kotze said.

Jobs

The community of Gam was eager to find out if there would be any jobs on the project.

The governor warned them not to harass the contractors and said any recruitment would be channelled through the office of the constituency councillor.

“They (contractors) will tell us what they need and then we will advise and provide,” he said.
