The ministry of finance has appointed former Nedbank CEO Lionel Matthews as a technical advisor. Matthews will serve in the department of state accounts for two years.
“The ministry requested for technical assistance from development partners and are happy to respond by indicating that Mr Matthews has joined the ministry,” spokesperson Tonateni Shidhudhu said.
Amongst his duties is to embark on capacity building programmes to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with ministry officials, Shidhudhu added.
“Mr Matthews is motivated to continue his journey of contributing to the realisation of the national development goals - this time around, in the public sector,” he said.
Matthews took early retirement in March after leading Nedbank for seven years. Prior to his appointment as Nedbank CEO, he also served as Old Mutual Investment Group CEO.
A chartered accountant by profession, he holds a bachelor of accountancy degree and an executive masters of business administration degree from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town.
