Matric Farewells: To be held or not?
Since the first cases of Covid-19 were reported in Namibia, almost everything has come to a standstill. Many high schools are looking at their options to see if matric farewells can still be held, but it looks like there’s little chance of that happening this year.
Splitting of matric farewells
Some schools in the Khomas Region are thinking of having a separate matric farewell for grade 11s.
Roszelle Coetzee, the editorial coordinator of Academia Secondary School, says their plans are still the same despite the effect the pandemic has had on the 2020 school calendar.
“Yes, our grade 12s will be having a farewell at the end of October; however, I am not certain about the grade 11s,” she said.
The same goes for Windhoek High School and it is a given that the separate matric farewells for grade 11 and 12 will take place regardless. Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool will host theirs if regulations allow.
Not just the Khomas Region
Liza Day, a teacher at Otjiwarongo Secondary School, says at the moment they cannot give a definite answer.
“We are waiting to see how Covid will continue,” she says.
Schools such as Wennie du Plessis at Gobabis have completely scrapped their matric farewell dates.
If your school plans on hosting a matric farewell, do send an email to [email protected] or call +264 61 297 2106.
