Man killed in Eros hit-and-run
The body of 23-year-old Junior Smith lay in the street on Friday evening as his distraught father, Almas Lukas, buried his face in his hands.
Nothing could prepare Lukas, whose wife died recently, for what would greet him when a neighbour called him at his house across the street from where his son’s body was lying.
The accident happened on Nelson Mandela Avenue in Eros.
The man who crashed into Junior is suspected to have driven a red BMW. The impact was so forceful that parts of the car were found on the street some distance from where Junior’s body landed.
A neighbour told Namibian Sun that he heard a loud bang and immediately jumped over his wall, where he saw a body lying in the street. According to the witness, the BMW driver got out of the car and checked on the victim before speeding off.
Junior’s father sat on the pavement waiting for the police, comforted by his neighbours. Junior was visiting a friend across the street and returned home about 21:00. The car driver, who is suspected to have been speeding, crashed into Junior while he was crossing the street. Namibian Sun was accompanying the City Police on their regular patrol when the accident happened.
In Katutura, the police picked up a heavily intoxicated woman who was struggling to speak. Concerned about her safety, the police took her to the Wanaheda Police Station to sober up. The patrolling officers said this kind of thing happened often. For the most part, it was a quiet evening in Windhoek, as most shebeens and bars were closed because of the Heroes’ Day commemoration. Only bars with special licences were allowed to operate.
Some shebeens tried their luck, claiming to be hosting private parties, but they were closed by the City Police.
