A local club not taking anything for granted and doing everything possible to reach the final of the MTC Namibia Football Association (NFA) Cup final stages is Tura Magic.
The team roped in the experience of conditioning coaches Martin Angombe from Extreme Bootcamp – an extension of AC Boxing Promotion - and Katutura Bootcamp’s Benediktus ‘Chopie’ Mateus to thoroughly prepare the players.
“This as a trial run, and a great one at that. We want many teams to come on board, not just Magic,” Mateus said.
“We urge teams we are working with to come with the right mindset. We are here to work and need all the discipline.”
He added that a conditioning session held yesterday morning was great.
“We are trying to get the players back into shape. With the first trial session, we can see that they are not so bad. They just need to push in order to reach a certain level of fitness.
“The discipline and commitment are fine, but we demand a lot from them. We also want the corporate world to come on board as we are looking to do team-building sessions,” Mateus said.
Gruelling session
Larry Horaeb, Charles Hambira and Oswaldo Xamseb were just some of the players who turned up for the gruelling session. It was clearly visible that some of the players were taken by surprise by how difficult some of the sets were, as they are only accustomed to jogging.
Tura Magic board member Isack Hamata also turned up to watch the players train. He said they are slowly trying to pace the footballers into proper fitness.
“The fitness is a problem and one can see it game time. Some guys are committed and others are not. But we plan on changing that mentality,” he said.
Meanwhile, team coach Fortune Eichab said the players are struggling with upper body strength, which is why they roped in the conditioning coaches.
“We are currently playing in the transitional league and we are struggling with fitness. Football has been off for a while. So, we want to get back into rhythm and back to the level that we were in the past.
“The players don’t do extra work with their muscles. They’re struggling with muscle build because of that.”
He added that senior players like Hambira need a lot of work as he just returned to the squad after an illness.
Eichab said the new players seem to be in better shape.
The cup starts with a round of 32 on 15 May.
