Lions jet off to Brazil
The Oshakati-based Lions team, consisting of seven players, left the country yesterday to take part in the Neymar Jr's Five soccer tournament, which will take place at Instituto Projeto Neymar Jr in Praia Grande, Brazil.
The team came through the Namibian qualifiers and eventually eliminated Windhoek-based Bethlehem United during a one-on-one competition, which was used to break the tie, after a 0-0 draw.
Lions captain Pieter Hailombe netted the crucial goal that secured their path to Brazil.
Hailombe said travelling to Brazil is a dream come true for them and they plan on winning the trophy.
Themed 'Outplay Them All', the Neymar Jr's Five is a Red Bull initiative co-sponsored by Bank Windhoek, Snickers, Fresh FM and NBC.
It is a global five-a-side tournament bringing together players from all corners of the world to celebrate their shared passion - football.
It is a fast, technical and fun competition. The rules are simple: each match lasts 10 intense minutes, there is no goalkeeper and whenever a team scores, the opposition loses a player.
Squads consist of five to seven players, aged 18 to 25, and the tournament kicks off on 20 July.
