Legendary boxing guru dies

Legendary boxing guru and Ongwediva resident, Hiskia Shigwedha, 65, died on Wednesday in the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital after a long illness. His son, Sylvanus Shigwedha, confirmed the death in an interview with Nampa on Friday. Shigwedha started his boxing career in 1977 at Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region under the late Abiud Kanambunga's coaching, training alongside other legendary boxers such as Noah Tjombonde, Harry Simon and Jaysen Petrus.Shigwedha moved to Tsumeb in 1980, where he joined the Tsumeb Corporation Limited (TCL) boxing club and trained alongside retired boxers such as Nestor Tobias, Lizias Angula and Timoty Haikonda.Petrus described Shigwedha as national champion who has represented Namibia before independence at various boxing championships in South Africa.“Shigwedha later moved to northern Namibia, where he became a trainer of boxers along with other boxing lovers such as Joe Archer Shikongo, Isaak Elishi, Fauly Kakongo, Mathew Ndeshitila, Festus Endjala, Vaino Amukwa and the late Edward 'Man of Action' Wilbard,” Petrus explained.Shigwedha was also a boxing referee. He is survived by his wife, four children and six grandchildren.Namibian boxer Jeremiah Nakathila said that boxing has lost an icon. “It is always a sad thing when the boxing fraternity loses someone like Shigwedha.I have heard so much of him and I believe he is the reason why many became boxers because they were inspired by him.“It is up to us to continue the legacy and take Namibian boxing to another level,” Nakathila said. - Additional reporting by Jesse Jackson KauraisaNAMPA
