The first-ever Namibia Annual Sports Expo will be held from tomorrow until Saturday at the Independence and Hage Geingob stadiums.
The Namibia Annual Sports Expo (NASE), the brainchild of sports minister Erastus Uutoni, will be the country's biggest event dedicated to the sport, fitness and health industries, and is expected to place a special emphasis on local manufacturing.
The expo kicks off tomorrow, with the aim of showcasing Namibian sport and connecting with potential investors.
With an investment of about N$1.4 million, the expo will see activities such as seven-a-side soccer, volleyball, parliamentary games, tug of war and rugby, as well as sport clinics. Namibia Breweries Limited is the main sponsor and has injected N$300 000 in to the expo.
The event will be graced by local sport personalities like Paralympic champions Johannes Benson and Johannes Shilongo.
Other personalities include Frank Fredericks, who is a former track and field athlete who won four silver medals at the Olympic Games between 1992 and 1996, as well players from the Brave Warriors 'Class of 1998' - Ricardo Mannetti and Collin Benjamin. Mannetti is the former head coach of the Warriors, while Benjamin is his former assistant.
There will be 63 exhibitors, with foreign businessman and CEO of HERO Sportswear Egypt, Nagy Yehya, also expected to showcase his products through a partnership with the business arm of the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), Tartan Sports Administrator.
“When we went to the Africa Cup of Nations last year in Egypt, we not only went there to watch football, but to talk business. There we met three businessmen who were eager to be part of the expo.
“That's why we have HERO Sportswear Egypt here to exhibit as well,” said Freddy Mwiya, the chief administrator of the NSC.
Mwiya said the Namibian government has a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Senegal and an exhibitor from that country will also feature at the expo.
“HERO Sportswear Egypt has established itself as a global industry leader. Size and market dominance have allowed it to compile a list of exceptional brands, but our core team has not lost sight of our primary business objective: To create the best sporting goods for the best value in Africa and the Middle East,” Yehya said through an interpreter.
He added the sportswear specialist has prepared a variety of samples of all types high-quality materials, specifically for Namibian teams, as well as club sport apparel.
Local musicians are expected to perform at the event, with tickets for the expo costing N$20 for adults and N$10 for scholars. Buses will also be provided to transport locals to the Independence and Hage Geingob stadiums.
