Learners may return to school in less than a month

Michelline NawatisesThe executive director of the ministry of education, arts and culture, Sanet Steenkamp, announced the extension of the winter holiday of pre-primary to grade nine learners from 26 July to 4 August in a circular released on 6 July.The learners should return to school for face-to-face teaching and learning on 4 August. Teachers will be required to return to school on 2 August. Grade 10-11 and Advanced Subsidiary (AS) learners are currently on mandatory closure. The learners were due to return to face-to-face teaching and learning on 19 July but the schools were directed to commence with alternative modes of teaching, including offline and online approaches. Private schools that follow the Namibian curriculum should also adhere to changes in the school calendar as set out by the ministry of basic education. Private schools that follow alternative curriculums and timetables will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. External examinations for grade 11, grade 12 legacy curriculum and AS levels will commence on 15 November and conclude on 17 December, with the exception of early question papers and borrowed syllabi, which commence as of October.Covid-19 regulationsThe schools are directed to strengthen adherence to Covid-19 health protocols and must ensure that social distancing is adhered to, that the wearing of masks is strictly enforced and that the provision of handwashing and sanitising are in place. The schools must monitor that learners and education staff are regularly using these facilities. Hostel management should ensure that the appropriate staff is available to receive learners upon the re-opening of schools.The ED further announced the postponement of school board elections for 2021.
