African Stars' Edwin Korukuve and United Stars' Alfeus Ngwezi were yesterday morning awarded with the two individual awards that were up for grabs during last season's Bidvest Namibia Cup.
They were honoured at a ceremony held at the Namibian Football Association's (NFA) Football House.
Korukuve, who was instrumental in leading his team to the final of the tournament, claimed the Player of the Tournament accolade, while Ngwezi, who was playing for Rundu Chiefs at the time, was crowned the Top Goal-scorer after netting six times for that team.
Each player got a cheque of N$25 000 and a trophy presented by Bidvest Namibia's Theo Mberirua and NFA's Barry Rukoro.
Rukoro said the NFA was grateful to Bidvest Namibia for making resources available to allow footballers to display their talent.
“Bidvest came on board and provided an additional quality competition for our players. That has gone a long way in ensuring that the national team also play well, as was evidenced in our game against Nigeria [in a 2014 World Cup qualifier group match] that we drew 1-1 in Windhoek. It was a well-deserved investment from Bidvest Namibia and the players indeed rose to the occasion and made it a spectacle for all of us,” stated Rukoro.
Mberirua said Bidvest Namibia was impressed with the competition and is looking forward to the next one.
“We have no complains as sponsors. It was the first time that we invested so much in sports and we did all we could to make it a success and it paid off well. The reports we got, read and saw were also very pleasing and encouraging and we can only build on that,” Mberirua added.
According t Mberirua, the Player of the Tournament was selected based on discipline, commitment, dedication and consistency throughout the competition.
The 2013 Bidvest Namibia Cup started on February 9 in the regions and culminated in a spectacular final on June 1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, where African Stars beat Mighty Gunners 2-0 to be crowned champions.
Stars won prize money of N$500 000.
