Kingdom Chess Academy to host tourney
Chess players will have the opportunity to outsmart each other in a tournament in Windhoek this weekend.

The Kingdom Chess Academy will host a chess tournament this coming weekend in Windhoek.
The event will take place at the NamPower Convention Centre on Saturday.
Leonard Nghifikwa of the Kingdom Chess Academy says the event is expected to attract over 150 participants from different chess clubs.
Addressing mental challenges
“The tournament aims to address mental and emotional health challenges caused by Covid-19.
“It is aimed at creating mental health awareness and to promote chess as a mental development tool in all levels of society,” Nghifikwa said.
The organisers added that the tournament will be the largest individual chess competition this year.
“What makes this tournament special is that the chess players will be grouped according to their occupations.”
Groups
Group 1 will have the highest prize money and is open to all chess players in Namibia. It will pit the top chess masterminds in the country against each other.
Group 2 is reserved for students and it aims at finding out which tertiary institution player can claim the bragging rights.
Namibia has seen some exciting chess competitions among students over the years, but that has declined.
“We hope to create a platform where students from various tertiary institutions can battle it out on the chessboard and cultivate a healthy chess rivalry that seems to have been lost over the years,” Nghifikwa said.
Schoolchildren
The competition will not only be for university students.
“Section B will be played in different rooms and is reserved for high schools, primary schools and the little ones as young as five years.
“This will probably be the most exciting group, as we can't wait to see what these young stars are capable of.
“Parents and schools are encouraged to register their kids early to avoid disappointment, as we are only able to accommodate a limited number of players.”
NamPower is sponsoring the tournament to the tune of N$10 000.
