Khomas Netball League organiser and Afrocat Organisation founder Dimitri Bitler says they want to start early this season in order to avoid any possible lockdowns.
Last year, like other contact sports codes, netball was halted for more than two months by the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bitler is concerned that there might be further lockdowns and he wants to avoid the same situation this winter.
“It is indeed going to be a race against time and we want to start early in order to avoid the winter.
“No one knows what is going to happen but I think we have all been through the lockdowns of winter and that the games had to be halted.
“That is why starting our season in early March could save us from going through the lockdowns,” Bitler said yesterday.
Bitler added that the league’s starting dates and many other arrangements will be determined by the annual general meeting to be held this month.
Professionalism
The Khomas Netball Federation last year changed the name of the league from Premier League to Khomas Netball Super 10.
The league also includes a lower division which serves as a promotion and relegation hub.
No premier league players are allowed to play in the Khomas League.
All teams are entitled to three fixed dates which are submitted prior to the season and during the season, and a team may only ask for postponement twice.
“We have high hopes that we can actually professionalise the game a bit more.
“We will not reach that top professional level yet, but we are hoping to start somewhere this time around.
“Everything will be determined by sponsorships, which we hope will come on board,” Bitler said.
Winners
In 2021, Afrocat Lions were crowned champions of the 2021 Khomas Super 10 League after finishing top of the log with 14 wins from 14 netball matches.
